Group Counseling for Opioid Use Disorder

Recovery looks different for everyone, and so does the path to get there.

Group counseling for opioid use disorder is a fully supported part of your treatment plan, available to new and current patients across Virginia and Tennessee. Whether you attend virtually from home or from a telehealth station at your nearest treatment center, group sessions count equally as a counseling visit, the same as individual sessions with the added strength of a community around you.

With 10+ sessions offered every day, there’s a time that works for your schedule.

Group counseling is part of our broader, integrated treatment plan. For most patients, it works alongside medication-based recovery support to address both the physical and behavioral aspects of opioid use disorder. Why Groups Work

Group counseling is proven to be just as effective as individual counseling, and for some people, it’s even more powerful. Here’s why:

  • Anonymous participation. You’re in control of how much you share and when. There’s no pressure to reveal more than you’re comfortable with.
  • Learn from people who truly understand. Group sessions bring together people navigating the same challenges, creating a space where practical skills and real experience are shared freely.
  • No pressure to share until you’re ready. This is a safe, supportive environment where participation at your own pace is always welcome.
  • Confidential and respectful conversations. Every session is led by a licensed counselor who guides the group with care and professionalism. What’s said in group stays in group.
  • It counts. Group sessions are treated equally to individual counseling visits and are fully interchangeable within your treatment plan. Choosing group is not a lesser option.

How It Works

Group counseling is designed to fit into your life, not the other way around.

1

Who can attend

Group sessions are open to both new and current patients. New patients can begin attending as soon as their intake documentation is complete. From there, your counselor will work with you to determine the right frequency based on your level of care, whether that's weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly.

2

How you can attend

You have two options. Join virtually from any private location using your own device, or attend from a telehealth station at your nearest Crossroads treatment center. Either way, you'll need a stable connection, audio and video enabled, and a space where your conversation stays private.

3

What it counts toward

Group sessions are fully interchangeable with individual counseling visits. Attending group counts the same as a one-on-one session toward your treatment plan requirements. You won't be penalized for choosing group over individual, and many patients choose to do both.

Group Rules

To make sure every session is safe, respectful, and productive for everyone, all group members are expected to follow these guidelines:

  • Do not attend if you are actively impaired.
  • Arrive no more than 10 minutes after the session starts.
  • Be respectful when others share. No talking over others.
  • Everything discussed in group stays in group. Do not share who you saw or what was discussed outside of the session.
  • Join from a private location where no one else can see or hear the conversation.
  • Make childcare arrangements before the session begins.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery during group.
  • Keep your audio and video enabled for the duration of the session.
  • Sharing is never required.
