Crossroads Treatment Centers (Crossroads), a national leading provider of comprehensive, evidence-based care for individuals affected by substance use disorders (SUDs), marks two decades of transformative, patient-centered care in the fight against the disease of addiction.
Crossroads was founded May 5, 2005, by Rupert McCormac, IV, MD, a practicing psychiatrist committed to health equity, who recognized an opportunity to reshape the nation’s approach to addiction care. By delivering medical intervention through a humanizing approach of respect and empathy – he observed patients having better outcomes. To this day, the company has consistently upheld its mission to advance health equity and remove barriers such as stigma for those affected by these challenges.
“That early experience in my career shaped everything we do at Crossroads,” said Dr. McCormac, Founder and Chief Executive Officer. “Twenty years later, I’m proud to lead an organization of over 1,000 professionals who continue to challenge the status quo, delivering care that’s grounded in evidence, compassion, empathy and a deep respect for every individual we serve.”
What began as one person’s vision has grown into a nationwide mission. With more than 100 centers across nine states, Crossroads is a unified team of doctors, nurse practitioners, counselors, and highly trained professionals all dedicated to providing the most accessible and highest-quality treatment available to combat the growing SUD epidemic that affects more than 48.5 million people nationwide. Today, Crossroads continues to play a vital role in expanding access to evidence-based care and improving lives in the face of this national crisis.
In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, Crossroads reflects on the strong connection between mental health and SUDs—while reaffirming its commitment to innovative, compassionate care. Since inception, the organization has focused on meeting people where they are, providing support that is accessible, judgment-free and centered on patients’ individual needs and recovery journey. This commitment is especially crucial given that an estimated 17 million adults – representing 6.7% of the U.S population – are affected by co-occurring substance use and mental health conditions.
“Mental Health Awareness Month is a powerful reminder that mental health and substance use challenges are deeply intertwined,” said Dr. Jerome Adams, Crossroads Board Member, Former U.S. Surgeon General, and member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw a significant rise in mental health issues—further underscoring the urgent need for integrated, compassionate care. Crossroads has been at the forefront of transforming addiction treatment in this country—leading with science and empathy.”
Compassionate, integrated care at Crossroads extends beyond patients – it’s a core part of the workplace culture. Understanding that employee well-being leads to patient well-being, Crossroads was recently named a 2025 USA Today Top Workplace, a testament to the fact that its people are the heart of the organization. Many members of the Crossroads team bring a unique level of empathy and understanding to their work, as many have their own personal journey with SUDs. This lived experience allows them to provide not just treatment, but a level of care that deeply resonates with those they serve.
“I do this work because everyone deserves a chance to live,” said Brooke Richards, Crossroads Counselor. “Watching my father lose his life to addiction and helping my mother find sobriety showed me both heartbreak and the hope in recovery. I truly believe that if my father had access to treatment, he might still be here today. That’s why I’m passionate about medication-based recovery support – and why I’m proud to be part of Crossroads, where we give people the chance to reclaim their lives.”
As Crossroads reflects on its 20-year history, its vision for the future remains clear: to provide the most convenient, comprehensive, high-quality care available for individuals with SUDs. Crossroads is taking meaningful steps toward breaking down barriers to care and expanding its impact on a national level – reaching even more individuals and families in need.
